How to Fix Applied Energistics 2 Errors
Device Missing Channel means AE2 ran out of channels or the controller is invalid. Channel limits per cable, controller rules and when to use channel modes.
Quick Fix
Make sure the controller glows, keep 8 or fewer channel devices on each normal cable run, and carry bigger groups on dense cable, which holds 32 channels.

Device Missing ChannelHow to Fix
Hover over a device with Jade or The One Probe installed. If it says Device Missing Channel, the problem is channels.
Swap in smart cables to see how many channels each run carries, and rearrange devices so no normal cable carries more than 8.
Run dense cable out of the controller as a backbone and branch off in groups of 8 or fewer on normal cable.
Give networks with more than 8 devices that need a channel a controller, and check that it glows rather than showing red.
Operators can change the mode with /ae2 channelmode <mode> or set channels in config/ae2-common.toml. The modes are default, x2, x3, x4 and infinite.
If the game crashes instead, open the crash report. A Ticking block entity crash whose Name line starts with ae2: comes from an AE2 block, and Block location gives its position.
Common Causes
- The cable is full. Normal cable and full-block devices carry up to 8 channels, dense cable and ME P2P tunnels up to 32, and a device beyond that limit gets no channel.
- The network has no controller. Such an ad-hoc network supports up to 8 devices that need a channel, and once you add a ninth, all of them shut down.
- The controller is invalid and turns red. Every controller block on the network has to be connected, the whole controller must fit inside 7x7x7, and a controller block can have neighbors on both sides along one axis only.
- The channel mode changed. The channels option in ae2-common.toml sets the capacity of every cable, so a base built for x2 or infinite runs short when a server goes back to default.
- AE2 and its addons don't match. Every AE2 release is built for one Minecraft version, and the current releases run on NeoForge only.
Diagnostic Steps
- Check that the controller glows.
- Look for Device Missing Channel.
- Count channel devices on each normal cable.
- Move large groups onto dense cable.
- Check the channel mode with /ae2 channelmode.
FAQ
How many channels does AE2 cable carry?
Normal cable and full-block devices carry 8 channels, dense cable and ME P2P tunnels 32. The x2 mode doubles that to 16 and 64, and x4 raises it to 32 and 128.
Can I turn channels off in AE2?
Yes. The infinite mode removes all channel limits, and a controller still cuts the network's power use a lot. Operators set it with /ae2 channelmode infinite, or you can set channels in ae2-common.toml.
Why is my AE2 controller red?
Its shape breaks a rule. All controller blocks must be connected, fit inside 7x7x7 and have neighbors on both sides along one axis at most. Once the shape is right and it has power, it glows again.
