How to Fix Particle Rendering Crash
A Rendering Particle or Ticking Particle crash means one particle broke the game. How to find the mod behind it and what the particle lines in the report say.
Quick Fix
Open the crash report and read the stack trace under the error. The package names in it show which mod the broken particle comes from.
Error Message
Description: Rendering ParticleHow to Fix
Open the newest file in the crash-reports folder and find the particle section below the stack trace.
Look for a mod's package name in the stack trace and the particle's class name in the Particle line, then update or remove that mod.
If the stack trace names a rendering mod or shader loader, update it or test the game without it.
Set Particles to Minimal under Options, Video Settings. Fewer particles spawn, which can keep you playing while you look for the cause.
If the world crashes every time it loads, set particles:2 in options.txt before starting the game. 2 is Minimal.
Common Causes
- A particle broke while the game was drawing it. The crash report says Description: Rendering Particle, and the section Particle being rendered lists the particle.
- A particle broke while the game was updating it. The report then says Description: Ticking Particle, with a section called Particle being ticked.
- The game couldn't create a particle. The report says Description: Exception while adding particle and shows the particle ID, such as examplemod:spark.
- A rendering mod or shader loader changes how particles are drawn, and its code shows up in the stack trace under the error.
Diagnostic Steps
- Open the newest crash report.
- Read the Description line and the particle section.
- Find the mod named in the stack trace.
- Update or remove that mod and start again.
FAQ
How do I change particles without opening the game?
Edit options.txt in your game folder and set particles:2 for Minimal. 0 is All and 1 is Decreased.
Can too many particles crash Minecraft?
Not in vanilla. Each particle group holds at most 16384 particles, and once a group passes 12288 the game skips new ones at random. A crash that names a particle points to broken particle code.
What does Particle Type mean in the crash report?
It names the group the particle is drawn with, not the particle itself. The Particle line above it describes the particle that broke.
